WAYNE WHEELER
A LASTING COMET LEGACY

Longtime Mason Middle School Coach Retires After 30 Years of Inspiring Comets

“It’s a great day to be a Comet!”

For three decades, those words have been much more than a familiar greeting from Wayne Wheeler. They have represented an attitude, an expectation, and a way of approaching each new day.

After an extraordinary 30 years of service to Mason student-athletes, the longtime Mason Middle School Cross Country and Track and Field coach is retiring, leaving behind a legacy that reaches far beyond race times, championship finishes, and places on a podium.

Wayne’s own journey as a runner began later than most. He didn't take up the sport until age 37, when hearing a co-worker talk about training for a nine-mile race left him amazed enough to see what running was all about.

That first jog became a lifelong passion.

Over the years, Wayne competed in more than 700 road races across 18 states, completed seven Boston Marathons, and became one of the Cincinnati area's most recognizable and respected distance runners. Remarkably, he continued logging serious mileage well into his eighties.

But for Wayne, running was never simply about accumulating miles.

It became a way to serve others.

Through a decade of participation in events associated with Cincinnati's Flying Pig Marathon, Wayne helped raise more than $350,000 for cystic fibrosis research—another example of a life spent turning personal passion into an opportunity to make a difference.

Yet perhaps Wayne Wheeler's greatest contribution to running can't be measured in miles at all.

It can be measured in young lives influenced.

For 30 years, Coach Wheeler shared his enthusiasm, wisdom, encouragement, and unmistakable positivity with generations of Mason Middle School student-athletes. As head coach of Cross Country and Track and Field, he helped young runners discover what they were capable of accomplishing—not only as athletes, but as teammates and people.

His athletes learned that success wasn't reserved for the person who crossed the finish line first.

It was found in showing up.

It was found in doing the work.

It was found in persevering when something became difficult.

And, perhaps most importantly, it was found in encouraging the person running beside you.

That philosophy was captured perfectly in the phrase heard countless times at practices and meets:

“It’s a great day to be a Comet!”

Simple words, but from Coach Wheeler they carried a much bigger message: Be grateful for the opportunity. Bring a positive attitude. Give your best. And make the people around you better.

Those lessons will remain long after his final practice.
