5/28 | Regional Semi-Final vs. Centerville @ Indian Hill 2:00 |
lost | 6-5 | 26-4 | 18-0 | FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE CINCINNATI, OH — In one of the most stunning upsets of the postseason, Centerville overcame the odds and defeated top-seeded Mason, 6-5, in a thrilling Division I regional semifinal on Wednesday evening. Mason (26-4), the Greater Miami Conference champions and winners of 21 straight earlier this season, were widely considered favorites to represent Southwest Ohio in Akron. The Comets had previously defeated Centerville, 4-2, in April, and entered the contest with one of the state’s most feared offenses, averaging over nine runs per game. But the surging Elks (16-13), who entered May at 8-12, continued their late-season resurgence, winning for the eighth time in nine games. Clutch two-out hitting and capitalization on Mason errors helped Centerville erase multiple deficits and ultimately pull ahead for good. Mason led early, thanks to back-to-back two-out RBI hits from Avery Clayton and Alea Hensley in both the first and third innings. Hensley finished 3-for-3 with 3 RBI in a stellar performance. Despite Mason’s offensive pressure, the Centerville pitcher settled in during the middle innings, stranding four Mason runners between the fourth and sixth frames. The turning point came in the sixth inning when Centerville capitalized on a Comets error to tie the game before taking the lead on a sacrifice fly, 5-4. The Elks added a crucial insurance run in the seventh to make it 6-4. Facing elimination, Mason rallied in the bottom of the seventh. After placing the tying run in scoring position with two outs, Hensley drove in one more run to make it 6-5. But a grounded out ended the game and Centerville celebrated a monumental win. Mason’s historic season also marked the final game for longtime head coach Liann Muff, who announced earlier this year that 2025 would be her last at the helm. “This whole season has been bittersweet,” Muff said. “I'm just the luckiest coach to be able to finish with such a great group of kids.” Muff concludes her career with over 300 wins, leading Mason to the state Final Four in both 2013 and 2016. She had been with the program since 2004 and leaves behind a legacy of excellence and leadership. The Comets also bid farewell to a talented senior class: Alea Hensley, Addie McBrayer, Lucy Beese, Annabelle Geiser, Ava Leenellett, Halle Martin, and Fox. Annabelle Geiser, who singled in the first inning, ended her career with 213 hits—13th all-time in OHSAA history and the most ever by a Greater Cincinnati player. Her 70 hits this season tie her for 10th in state single-season history. “This is a player-led team,” Muff added. “They executed all season long and just came up a little short today.” |

5/29-5/30 | OHSAA State Championships College of Wooster & Aspen Racquet Club |
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE WOOSTER, OH — Mason High School junior Greg Bernadsky completed a storybook postseason run on Friday, 5/30, winning the OHSAA Division I Boys Tennis Singles Championship with a 6-4, 6-4 victory over Nihal Narisetty of St. Xavier. The rematch of the Southwest District final was held indoors at the Aspen Racquet Club after rain halted the semifinals at the College of Wooster. The hard-hitting Bernadsky had earlier dispatched Westlake’s Xander Jhaveri, 6-0, 6-3, to reach the final. His triumph capped off a remarkable comeback season after a wrist injury in 2024 sidelined him from postseason play. “Ever since the beginning of the postseason, there was one goal,” Bernadsky said. “I wanted to win state, because last year I didn’t get a chance.” Mason Head Coach Mike Reid praised his junior standout: Comets Capture OTCA State Team Title the Following Day On Saturday, Bernadsky led the #1-ranked Comets to their fourth OTCA State Team Championship, defeating New Albany 3-2 in the semifinals and University School 3-0 in the finals. Mason’s semifinal match against #2 New Albany was a tactical chess match, with Coach Reid altering the lineup to create a dominant doubles setup. Daniel Tonkal and Shreyas Mantha, normally in the singles rotation, shifted to doubles, allowing freshmen Sean Fu and Leo Qin to fill singles spots. The lineup gamble paid off. Tonkal and Janek Teply (dubbed “TNT”) dominated first doubles, while Mantha and Aron Dornhecker rolled at second doubles. Bernadsky clinched the match with a 6-1, 6-4 win over New Albany’s Jackson Clements. Semifinal Result: Mason 3, New Albany 2
In the finals against University School, the Comets wasted no time, sweeping all three singles matches in straight sets to clinch the championship. The doubles matches went unfinished as the title had already been secured. Final Result: Mason 3, University School 0
“This is what Mason Tennis is about — championships,” said Teply. “Tonkal and I were pretty disappointed about not winning doubles in the individual tournament, but this feels amazing. And we’ll be back next year!” The Comets graduate only one senior, Aron Dornhecker, and return a deep, hungry squad looking to defend both team and individual crowns in 2026. |
