Mason Comets Varsity Cross Country Opens Season with Decisive Victory at Loveland XC Invitational

MASON, OH – August 30, 2025 – The Mason Comets varsity cross country team kicked off their season with a dominant performance at the Loveland XC Invitational, securing a significant victory against a strong field of top teams from various divisions across the state.

Head Coach Tim Pitcher expressed satisfaction with the team's opening effort, stating, "What a fantastic start to the season for the Mason Comets varsity! Opening with a solid victory at the Loveland XC Invitational against some of the state's best teams is a testament to our athletes' hard work and dedication. We saw some truly encouraging individual performances and excellent team packing."

Senior Caden Winship led the Comets with a strong runner-up finish, just 15 seconds shy of his lifetime personal record in his first race of the season. He was closely followed by a tight pack of Comets, including Luke Berkibile (10th), Paras Yadav (11th), and Eligh Amshoff (12th), with Carson Wyss (16th) rounding out the scoring five.

Coach Pitcher also highlighted significant personal bests, noting, "It was particularly exciting to see junior Ojas Parekh and sophomore Isaac Mecum achieve impressive 30+ second personal records. This speaks to the depth and potential within our squad. Furthermore, the decisive win in the open division race demonstrates the overall strength of our program."

While pleased with the strong start, Coach Pitcher emphasized the road ahead. "This was a strong performance, and we should certainly be proud of this opening effort. However, this is just the beginning. We have our sights firmly set on the postseason in October, and there's a lot of work ahead of us to reach our full potential and achieve our ultimate goals. We're committed to continuing to push ourselves and improve with every training session and every race."

The Comets will look to continue their momentum this Saturday as they host many of the region's top teams at their home course.

9/6 Mason Invite at Corwin Nixon     The Mason Comets varsity cross country team successfully defended their home course last Saturday, clinching a narrow but impressive victory at the 51st Mason XC Invitational. The Comets edged out #4 ranked Springboro by just four points, overcoming a strong field that included teams from West Virginia, Kentucky, and Tennessee.

Head Coach Tim Pitcher praised his team's resilience and competitive spirit, stating, "This was a truly gritty performance from our boys today. To defend our home course against a top-ranked team like Springboro and other strong programs speaks volumes about their determination. It was a tight battle, and every single point mattered."

Senior Caden Winship led the charge, securing first place with a time of 15:43. The scoring five was rounded out by Paras Yadav, Eligh Amshoff, Carson Wyss, and Zach Hayden. Coach Pitcher specifically highlighted the crucial effort of senior Carson Wyss, who held off three Springboro runners in the final mile to secure key points.

"The team concept of cross country was on full display today," Coach Pitcher noted. "We had some guys step up when others weren't at their absolute best, which is a testament to the strong bond and 'next man up' mentality within this group. I also want to commend freshman Tommy Moran for an impressive race on a tough course, setting a new seasonal PR and moving up in our team order."

While proud of the hard-earned victory, Coach Pitcher emphasized the work that remains ahead. "This win is a great confidence booster, but we know there's a lot of work to be done. We have our sights firmly set on the postseason, which is six weeks away, and we need to continue to improve and refine our race execution and training. We'll be utilizing the next two weeks in a dedicated training cycle to prepare for the historic Detwiller Course in Peoria, Illinois, where we'll face some of the Midwest's top teams."

The Comets will race next weekend at Springboro.

Coach Pitcher extended his gratitude, adding, "A special thanks goes out to the Mason Boosters and all the parents who came out to set up and tear down the course and help make the competition happen and be a success. Your support is invaluable."
9/13 Springboro Invite

The Mason Comets cross country team demonstrated their promising future and impressive depth with a competitive fourth-place finish at the recent Springboro XC Invitational. The young squad, featuring several underclassmen, delivered a performance that has Head Coach Tim Pitcher optimistic about the remainder of the season and beyond.

Sophomore Logan Mix led the charge for the Comets, opening his season with a standout fourth-place individual finish and a new personal record of 16:08. This time also marks the second fastest on the team this year. Mix was followed by Tommy Moran, Isaac Mecum, and Nathan Hayden, all of whom continued to achieve personal records, each shaving another 10 seconds off their previous bests. Senior Jackson Moellers rounded out the team's scoring, leading a strong contingent of other Comets across the finish line.

"I am very happy with the overall depth and performance of the team for this season and the future," stated Coach Pitcher. "Our younger runners gained valuable varsity experience, and their continuous improvement, coupled with the strong performances from our seasoned athletes, truly highlights the bright and strong future of this program."

The team's ability to compete at a high level with a youthful roster underscores the depth and talent within the Mason Comets cross country program. This strong showing at Springboro sets a positive tone as the team continues to develop and pursue their goals for the postseason.

Next up, Mason will compete at the Richard Spring Invite on Saturday, 9/20.

9/20 Richard Spring Invite
9/20 Peoria Spring Invite     The Mason Boys Cross Country team traveled to Peoria, IL pm Saturday, 9/20 to compete on the historic Deweiller Park course against some of the top-ranked teams from across the Midwest. This marked the largest and most talented field the team has faced this season.

The team finished seventh out of sixty-nine teams, with an impressive 22 out of 25 boys setting new lifetime personal bests on the course. Despite a few key runners being sidelined by illness, which impacted the team's ability to fire on all cylinders, the JV boys achieved a strong runner-up finish in their field.

Coach Pitcher expressed encouragement regarding the team's development as they work towards their postseason goals. The competition provided valuable experience for the boys, allowing them to race in a very large and talented field, which will prepare them for future high-stakes races.

The team is scheduled to compete this Thursday at the Stoneberger Invite at Summit Park.
9/25 Stoneberger Invite at Summit Park

The Mason Comets Boy's cross country team showcased remarkable grit and unwavering effort, securing a hard-fought runner-up finish at the Sycamore's Stoneberger XC Invitational this past Thursday night. Competing on a wet and muddy course, the young Comets demonstrated their competitive spirit and dedication.

Senior Luke Berkible led the team with an inspiring bounce-back race, earning him a runner-up finish. Isaac Mecum and Tommy Moran both powered through to finish in the Top Ten, with Zach Hayden close behind. Senior Jackson Moellers rounded out the scoring, contributing to the team's strong performance.

Head Coach Pitcher expressed immense encouragement regarding the team's performance, stating, "I was incredibly encouraged by the grit and effort I saw from our young Comets today. To compete so fiercely and achieve a runner-up finish under such challenging, muddy conditions speaks volumes about their determination and resilience. This team continues to impress with their commitment and spirit."

The Comets are set for a quick turnaround, with their next competition at the VOA park on Tuesday for the Fall Classic hosted by CHCA.

Following this, a split squad will see most of the team running at Milford this Saturday, while the varsity will head to the prestigious Nike Twilight in Terre Haute, IN.

10/4 Milford and Nike Invite

The Mason Comets cross country team demonstrated encouraging development in their races this past Saturday, with a split squad competing at Milford and the varsity at the Nike Twilight Invitational in Terra Haute, IN. While Head Coach Tim Pitcher is pleased with the team's progress, he emphasizes the critical need for meticulous attention to detail as they set their sights on the state championship.

At Milford, the "B" group secured a solid 8th place finish, with Sophomore Akshaj Sai Moola leading the team and achieving a new lifetime personal best. Meanwhile, the varsity squad competed against nearly 500 of the Midwest's top runners at the Nike Twilight Invitational, finishing 15th and emerging as the top team from Ohio. This experience against a deep field is crucial for their postseason preparation.

"I'm incredibly encouraged by the development I'm seeing from our boys," stated Coach Pitcher. "Their effort and the personal records achieved, especially at Milford, show a great trajectory. Competing against such high-caliber teams at Nike Twilight also provides invaluable experience that will serve us well."

However, Coach Pitcher also highlighted areas for refinement. "While the progress is evident, to achieve our desired results at the state championship, we need to sharpen our focus on the little things. Every detail, every stride, every strategic decision will matter. It's about consistent execution and mental toughness in those crucial moments."

The Comets will continue to train and compete with a clear vision of their postseason goals. "We have the talent and the heart," Coach Pitcher added. "Now, it's about channeling that into a meticulous approach to every aspect of our training and racing. The state championship is within reach, but it will demand our absolute best and a relentless focus on perfecting the fundamentals."

The GMC Championships are set for Saturday, 10/18, at VOA. Mason will be seeking the team's 6th consecutive league title and 14th in the past 15 years.

8/23 Saturday Night Lights @ Centerville.
This past Saturday at the Centerville night meet, the Mason Girls CC team laced up their shoes for their first meet of the season and competed in the annual SNL meet (Saturday Night Lights).  This meet is a true spectacle.  1000s of runners, 10+ races and schools from far and wide compete in this literal circus.  The girls raced in the early JV and Varsity B races and did well with great efforts from Liz Polack and Brooklyn McKay along with Clara Vaz and Evie Marvich.

In the Championship race, which included schools from Kentrucky, and all over Ohio, the girls got out well and looked strong early.  The race was quite the battle and many teams went back and forth competing for the top spots.

Mason was led by Atalia Hawkins, and she finished quite well, with a strong early season time. Next up for us was Auna Koro, who looked strong and Emily Moran who had a great race.  Tessa Palmer and Eva Mathur rounded out our top 5 scorers and heled the team acheive a 7th place finish overall.

Next up for the Comets is the annual Mason Invitational at Corwin Nixon Park on Saturday, Sept. 6th.

9/6 Mason Invite

This past weekend the Comet Girls CC Team competed in the 51st annual Mason Cross Country Invitational.  Teams from 4 states were present, and many strong runners.

The girls got out pretty well for this 5k contest, and were led by Atalia Hawkins who took 2nd overall.  Our next scorer on the day was Auna Korostyshevsky who ran well and placed in the top 15.

After Auna, Emily Moran had a great day, and nearly broke 20:00, followed by Eva Mathur and Tessa Palmer.

The team took 3rd overall behind a strong West Virginia team and Springboro and look to be improving each week.

Mason will compete Saturday, 9/13 at the Troy Twilight Meet.

9/13 Troy Twiight Meet (girls)

This past weekend the Mason girl’s cross country team traveled north to Troy for the Troy Twilight Invitationals. The meet is very large with many teams from the area competing.  The race is also at night, and is quite chaotic.

As soon as the gun went off, Atalia Hawkins (11) went out hard and took the lead. She led this race of over 400 runners for over a mile, and then she filtered back a few spots to ultimately take 8th overall.

Auna Korostyshevsky (11) also ran well, and placed quite high, and really helped the team out.  Emily Moran continues to run very well, and finished just behind Auna, with Evan Mathur (10) and Tessa Palmer (12) rounding out our final scorers.

When the dust settled and the score was in, the Mason Comets took the win.  It is our first win of the season and quite a confidence booster for the team.  They ran tough, had lots of season best times and really appear to be coming together.

Mason Girls CC will compete next Saturday, 9/20 at the Peoria Spring Invite.

9/20 Peoria Spring Invite

This past weekend the Comet Girl's CC team traveled West to face the best of the midwest at the annual Richard Spring Invitational in Peoria, Illinois.  It is a loaded meet with a huge field of outstanding runners. The race is held at the historic Detweiller park in Peoria, the home of the Illinois state championship.

The team ran tough and fared pretty well considering the size of the meet and the level of competition.  Atalia Hawkins (11) ran great, and took 11th overall, out of over 600 athletes competing.  She ran lights out, and had her best time ever on this fast 3 mile course.  She was followed by Emily Moran who also ran great and fought through the masses quite well.  Auna Koro (11) was also strong, and Eva Mathur and Mitalee Godbole rounded out our final 2 scorers on the day.

As a team we got out really well, and looked great for the first half of the race, but faded some late. The team placed in the top 25% of this massive race with over 60 teams.  We were happy with our times and look like we were moving in the right direction.  Avery Moellers and Kara Kamel also took nice steps forward and are really coming into their own.

Mason Girls will be at the Stoneberger Invite this Thursday at Summit Park.

9/25 Stoneberger Invite at Summit Park     The Mason Girls CC Team competes this Saturday at the Ed Leas Fall Classic.
10/2 Ed Leas Fall Classic (girls)

On Thursday, 9/25, the Girls CC team had a smaller meet at Summit Park in Blue Ash at the Sycamore Stoneberger Invitational.  It was a smaller meet, but solid local competition.  The Comets laced up the shoes and took on Oak Hills, Sycamore, West, Ursula and other local foes.

The team ran fairly well, but were missing a few key players. (or normal #2 runner, #4 and #7) This became a factor quickly as Sycamore and Oak Hills ran nicely together in packs and sadly split our scorers up quite a bit.  This resulted in a close contest, but ultimately we took 3rd overall at this meet.

Atalia Hawkins led the way for Mason again, and Emily Moran (11) had a great race, nearing her personal best on this sloppy challenging course!

The team got nice production out of Mitalee Godbole and freshman Evie Marvich as well.  Mason's 5th and final scorer on the day was Kara Kamel, who ran a nice race and scored for her first time in a varsity race.

Overall, there were some positives on the day, but still have lots to work on with this younger crew.  The Comets are coming along and slowly putting the pieces together for a nice season.

Up next for Mason Girls CC is the GMC Championships, Saturday, 10/11 at VOA.

Mason Girls will be seeking their 6th straight GMC Title and 14th overall since 2010.

10/4

The Mason Girl's XC Team notched a quality win this weekend at the Milford Invitational.  The team was excited to compete against local rivals, Sycamore, East, West and Milford.  The team had been nursing a few minor injuries, but the girls got healthy and ran very well.

Atalia Hawkins had a great race and ran a new personal best to land in 5th place at this loaded contest.  She ran well in a pack of some of the state's best runners and finished well.

Next up was Junior Emily Moran. Emily has been on fire of late, and she too ran a new PR and really stepped up to help the team.  Auna Koro was back again, as was Evan Mathur, both of whom had been on the shelf for a few weeks. This pair ran tough and made a huge difference in our team strength.

Lastly, our final scoring runner who really stepped up and helped the team win was Mitalee Godbole. She ran a new personal best, and secured the win for the team.  We also had great production out of freshman Evie Marvich who ran very well and continues to improve.  Overall, it was a great team effort.  They ran smart, ran hard and competed with great purpose and intensity.  This was our best win of the year, and the team really appears to be clicking.

Up next for Mason Girls CC is the GMC Championships, Saturday, 10/18 at VOA.

Mason Football season kicked off this past Friday in the Hall of Fame Game at Dwire Field. The outcome is not what was hoped as the Comets suffered a 21-7 defeat at the hands of Springboro.

The Panthers did all their scoring in the first half putting up three TD's while holding Mason in check. The Comets got on the board at the 5:25 mark in the third quarter via a 1-yard rush by Brandon Birsong. The remainer of the game was a defensive struggle as neither team found pay dirt.

Mason took on the West Lakota West last Friday at Firebird Stadium, falling 34-13, giving the home team all they wanted for 3+ quarters. A single point seperated the two GMC jaugernauts until 7 minutes in the contest when West quickly put up three TD's to clinch the game.

The Comets got on the board first when QB De'Angelo Birch 19-yard rushed for a TD (Max Gogul PAT). Mason looked to even the score with 4:37 remaining in the third quarter. Brandon Birdsong's 14-yard run made it 14-13 (rush for 2 failed).

De'Angelo finished the game with 8 of 18 passing for 94 yards and 88 yards rushing on 19 attempts.

Mason (0-2, 0-1) will look to another Lakota School (East Thunderhawks 2-0, 1-0) this Friday at home to get in the win column. The Hawks defeated Oak Hills last Friday 14-7.

This Friday is also the annual Tailgate Night. The MHS Athletic Department will team up with booster/student groups to sponsor a variety of food and game booths in the MMS parking lot before kick off .

Comets Hand Lakota East First Loss in 40–35 Thriller

The Mason Comets defended their home turf Friday night with a 40–35 victory over previously unbeaten Lakota East, earning a statement win in a back-and-forth GMC showdown at Dwire Field.

The Comets set the tone early with a safety from AJ Kaylor, then extended their lead when Brandon Birdsong broke loose for a 30-yard touchdown run late in the first quarter. Mason carried a 9–7 lead into the second quarter and pushed ahead just before halftime on a clutch 30-yard field goal by Max Gogul, taking a 19–14 advantage into the break.

Lakota East responded in the third quarter as quarterback Nile Knutson connected twice with receiver Christopher Bouyer for touchdowns, briefly putting the Thunderhawks in front. Mason answered with a 3-yard scoring run from De’Angelo Birch, setting up a wild fourth quarter.

Trailing 29–26, the Comets leaned heavily on Birch — and the senior delivered. Birch bulldozed his way to two more touchdowns in the fourth quarter, finishing with a dominant 28 carries for 214 yards (7.6 avg.) and four scores, including a long run of 32 yards that kept the Thunderhawk defense on its heels. Birch was also 5/12 passing for 59 yeards. His performance anchored a Mason rushing attack that powered the Comets through crunch time.

Lakota East added a late 28-yard touchdown strike from Knutson to Patrick MacFarlane, but the Comet defense held firm in the closing minutes to secure the win.

Birdsong’s explosive first-half touchdown run, Gogul’s steady kicking, and Kaylor’s early safety also proved critical in the victory.

With the win, Mason hands Lakota East (now 2–1) its first loss of the season and improves to 1-2 overall and 1-1 in the league, keeping themselves firmly in the hunt for a GMC title.

Mason goes on the road this Friday to Oak Hills. The Highlanders are 1-2 on the season and fell 14-9 versus Middletown last week.

9/12 @ Oak Hills won 24-14 2-2 2-1

Mason Football defeated Oak Hills 24-14 in an away game last Friday. The Comets rolled up 295 yards of total offense that includied 205 via passing yardage. Mason took a 17-0 lead into halftime holding the Highlanders out of the end zone with some serious defense.

Mason QB De'Angelo Birch had another solid game throwing a TD to Brandon Birdsong (21-yarder) and also rushing for 20 yards and another TD. Birdsong rushed for 46 yards on 9 carries. Taurien Wiggins scored on a 9-yard rush in the fourth quarter. Max Gogul booted a 36-yard field goal in the first quarter.

Mason (2-2, 2-1) will visit Hamilton this Friday. Big Blue fell to East last week, 31-27).

9/19 @ Hamilton won 28-21 3-2 3-1

The Comets showed their "mettle" this past Friday, in a big come-from-behind GMC road win. Mason entered their tilt with Hamilton on Friday with two consecutive wins, and they'll enter their next game with three. They came out on top against the Big Blue by a score of 28-21. For the Comets, this counts as revenge for the 7-3 victory the Big Blue walked away with the last time they faced one another back in September of 2024.

Big Blue led 21-7 after scoring another TD at the 6:31 mark in the third quarter. That's when the Mason come-back got underway. The Comets scored on their next three possesions with the go-ahead TD coming in the 4th quarter on a 1-yard rush by Alex Nagel.

Alex Brown's fumble recovery for a TD in the third quarter was key to getting the score even.

D'Angelo Birch, Mason QB, finished the game as the leading rusher for the Comets with 23 attempts for 88 yards and a TD. Tristan Nieuhaus caught a 5-yard TD pass from birch as well.

On defense, Alex Brown and Dave Hutton had 11 and 10 tackles, respectively.

Mason now has a winning record of 3-2 and 3-1 in the GMC. They will host Princeton this Friday for Homecoming. The Vikings (4-1, 4-0) demolished Lakota East last Friday 42-7.

Of note, head coach Brian Castner will reach a significant coaching milestone with his next win. He currently has 99 total wins, all in his 16 years as Mason's head football coach.

9/26 Princeton lost 35-21 3-3 3-2

The Comets took a tough 35-21 loss at home last Friday to visiting Princeton. Friday's Homecoming game was over three hours. It featured 31 penalties, including 22 penalties for 219 yards for Princeton and nine penalties for 73 yards for Mason.

The contest was tight at the half with the Vikings holding a 14-7 advantage. Princeton scored 3 more TD's in the remaining two quarters to pull away for the win.

QB De'Angelo Birch was 12/21 passing for 92 yards and a TD. Brandon Birdsong rushed for 59 yards on 17 carries and a TD. Cannen McBerry had a 43 yard gaunt for a TD late in the game.

The Comets (3-3, 3-2) will look to rebound next Friday at Fairfield. The Indians (3-3, 3-2) lost at East 34-7 last Friday.

10/3 @ Fairfield lost 14-13 3-4 3-3

Mason suffered a tough overtime loss at Fairfield last Friday by a final score of 14-13. The two teams each just mustered one score in regulation, but things turned exciting quickly in overtime as Fairfield came up with a huge stop on a two-point conversion to hold off Mason, 14-13.

Mason was able to get the game into OT with a Alex Nagel 8-yard run with just 4:45 remaining in regulartion. In the 5th quarter, the Indians scored first. Brandon Birdsong then had a 3-yard TD run setting up the failed 2-point conversion.

Nagel ended with 80 yards rushing on the night, Birdsong 65.

The Comets played well on an unfamiliar golf course, shooting a team total of 306 to finish 5th among the 20 teams in the afternoon wave.  Mason played with the day's overall event champions, Ottawa Hills, who posted a team total of 294.  Mason was only 12 strokes back of the winning team and is looking to reduce a few strokes off their average total in the next few tournaments.

Senior Curtis Crimmins - the Comets' #1 player - once again had the team's best score with a 75(+4).  Junior Jaxson Hutzelman and senior Alex Chamberlain each shot 76(+5) for the Comets, and senior Sam O'Donnel completed the scoring with a round of 79(+8).  The team's 5th score - belonging to junior Jack Hellmann with a round of 83(+12) - was quite important, since the Comets finished in a 3-way tie for 5th place with Buckeye Valley HS and Cincinnati Moeller HS.  Jack's score was better than the scores for the 5th place golfers on those other two teams, so Mason finished 5th in the event rather than 6th or 7th.  As Coach Brackenridge is constantly reminding his players... Every Shot Counts!
8/16 Moeller Invite         On Saturday, August 16, the Comets Boys Golfers played in the prestigious Moeller Invitational at Walden Ponds Golf Club.  Although Walden Ponds is the GMC Championship site, the course as played on 8/16 was quite different, using the Black tees at around 6,900 yards to challenge top teams from all around the state.  The soaked fairways made the course play even longer.

The team posted a score of 332 while playing without their usual #1 player, finishing in 19th place of 22 teams.  Something highly unusual occurred during the tournament, as the team's 4 best scores (of 5 players) were all the same score.  Coach Brackenridge couldn't recall that ever having happened in his coaching career.  Seniors Alex Chamberlain and Drew Freeman, junior Jack Hellmann, and sophomore Diego Orozco (making his first Varsity Green start) all posted rounds of 83.  In a humorous moment at the conclusion of the tournament, the four players who had already posted 83's watched junior Jaxson Hutzelman attempt a birdie putt from 30 feet on the final hole that would have given him an 83 as well.  Jaxson's putt just slid by the edge of the hole, and he posted an 84.  Mason Boys Golf competes next in the Springboro Invitational at Heatherwoode Golf Club on Monday, August 18.
8/18 Springboro Invite         On Monday, August 18, the Comets traveled to Springboro to compete at Heatherwoode Golf Club in the Springboro Invitational.  As defending champions in the event, Mason hoped to get out to a fast start against some excellent competition on a tough course.  Although the Comets first few holes were OK, eventually all 5 of the team members' score cards contained at least two double bogeys or worse, and Mason slipped to 11th place in the 19-team field.

Junior Jaxson Hutzelman led the team with a score of 79 (+8).  Seniors Curtis Crimmins (80) and Drew Freeman (84) along with junior Andrew Atchley (82) rounded out the scoring in the team total of 325.  Senior Sam O'Donnell posted the team's 5th score with 89.

Mason competes next in three 18-hole tournaments in a 3-day span starting on Saturday, August 23rd, with the Bellbrook Invitational at Sugar Valley Country Club.

8/23 Bellbrook Invite         On Saturday, August 23, the Mason Boys Golfers traveled to Bellbrook, Ohio, to compete at Sugar Valley Golf Club against 20 other Southwest Ohio teams in the Bellbrook Invitational.  Senior Curtis Crimmins once again had the team's lowest score, shooting a 74 (+3) to just miss out on second-team all-tournament honors (the top 10 players in the event had scores of 73 or lower).  Junior Jaxson Hutzelman overcame a slow start to post an excellent round of 76 (+5), while seniors Alex Chamberlain and Sam O'Donnell recorded rounds of 88 and 81, respectively.  Junior Jack Hellman overcame a very slow start by making two birdies on his second nine to post the team's fourth-best score of 84.
8/24 St. Xavier Invite

On Sunday the MHS Boys Golf Team played in the St. Xavier Invitational, competing in an elite field of 16 teams from all around Ohio.  The event was moved from its usual site of Maketewah Country Club to a first-time host venue, Stonelick Hills Golf Club in Batavia - a course that no one on the team had played before.  Mason's players didn't fare as well in the difficult conditions as some other teams did, with the Comets posting a season-high team total score of 344 and finishing last among the 16 teams.

Sophomore Logan Harter had the team's best score by two strokes with an 84.  Other team scores recorded belonged to seniors Curtis Crimmins (86) and Alex Chamberlain (87) and juniors Andrew Atchley (87) and Jaxson Hutzelman (88).

The team competes next in the Kettering Alter Invitational at Country Club of the North in Beavercreek, Ohio, TODAY, Monday afternoon, August 25th.  This will be the team's 3rd tournament in 3 days around Southwest Ohio, but it's important this time of year that the Comets are competing and preparing to play multiple days in a row.  The GMC Championship starts in only 15 days!

8/25 Alter Invite         On Monday, August 25, the Mason Boys Golfers traveled to Beavercreek to compete in the Kettering Alter Invitational at Country Club of the North.  Mason shot a team score of 330 and finished 16th out of 22 teams.

Senior Alex Chamberlain had the team's best score with an 81 (+9).  What's interesting about his round is that Alex was also +9 after his first 8 holes, so he played the final 10 holes in even par.

Senior Curtis Crimmins had the team's second-best score of 82; junior Jack Hellman posted the third score of 83.  Jack very nearly had the team's best score as he was leading the Comets scorers through 14 holes before running into difficulty on his 15th hole of the day.  Jack didn't let the single bad score bother him, though, as he played his remaining 3 holes in 1 under par.

Senior Sam O'Donnell posted an 84 to round out the team's total of 330, while sophomore Jason Harter had the 5th score of 88.

The team competes next in an unusual 9-hole home match at Heritage Club in Mason on Thursday, August 28, against GMC rival Lakota East.

8/28 East @ Heritage

The Comets Boys Golfers competed in a rare 9-hole dual match against league rival Lakota East on Thursday, August 28, at Heritage Country Club.  Mason posted a season-low 9-hole total score of 148 and recorded a 4-shot victory over a very talented Lakota East squad.

Senior Curtis Crimmins was the match medalist with a score of 3-under-par 33.  Junior Jaxson Hutzelman recorded a score of 2-under-par 34 to become the runner-up medalist in the match.  Also posting counting scores (best 4 scores comprise team total) for the Comets were senior Alex Chamberlain (39) and either of junior Jack Hellmann and senior Drew Freeman with 42's.

The team has a few days off from competition before hosting a tournament for the second time this year, the Mason Invitational at Miami Whitewater Forest, on Wednesday, September 3rd.

9/3 Mason Invite @ Whtewater
Mason Boys Varsity Golf put the depth of its program on full display in a tournament at Miami Whitewater on Wednesday, September 3rd.  Mason fielded 3 teams in the inaugural Mason Invitational at Whitewater, and all 3 teams finished in the top 4 among the 8 schools teams.

Team 1 consisted of 5 players from Varsity Green, and that team won the tournament by 14 strokes over Kings.    Alex Chamberlain led the team - and was the individual tournament medalist - with a fine score of 74 (+3) that included a 36 on the back nine.  Junior Jack Hellmann finished 2nd in the tournament with a score of 76.  Both players brought home individual plaques for making the all-tournament team (top 5 players among 40 competitors).  Rounding out the scoring for the first team were senior Curtis Crimmins with 78 and junior Jaxson Hutzelman with 79.

Team 2 was formed by 3 players from Varsity Green joined by two players from Varsity White.  Mason 2 finished 3rd in the 8-team event with a team score of 332.  Individual scores on that team were senior Sam O'Donnell with 82, juniors Andrew Atchley (82), Josh Morneau (80) and Mason Gallimore with 88.

Team 3 consisted of players from Varsity White and finished 4th in the tournament, defeating 4 of the 5 teams from other schools in the event.    Team 3's score was 337, and individual scores for that squad were 82 from senior Patrick Buckley, 83 from sophomore Elijah Goebel, and 86's from sophomores Diego Orozco and Oliver Stuart.

Mason tees it up next in two tournaments this weekend - the Findlay Invitational at Findlay CC on Saturday 9/6 and the Hadley Invitational at Glenview Golf Course on Sunday 9/7.

The GMC Championship Tournament at Walden Ponds Golf Club will take place next week on Tuesday, September 9 and Wednesday, September 10.  The results of the GMC tournament will determine the league standings for the entire season.

9/6 Findlay Invite

On Saturday, September 6, the Mason Boys Golf Team traveled to Findlay Country Club to compete for the second consecutive year in the highly selective Findlay Invitational.  On a difficult day for scoring due to the wind and dry course conditions, senior Drew Freeman led the team's scoring with a round of 87.  The team posted a total score of 359 to finish 12th in the 12-team field.

----------------

9/7 Hadley Invite

On Sunday, September 7, the Comets Boys Golfers rebounded with a solid score of 316 at Glenview Golf Course in the Hadley Invitational.  Senior Curtis Crimmins led the team with a score of 72 (even par) and finished in an individual tie for 3rd place among 105 players.  Additional team scores belonged to sophomore Diego Orozco with a 79, sophomore Logan Harter with an 82, junior Jack Hellman with an 83, and senior Sam O'Donnell with an 84.  The Comets finished 8th in a field of 21 teams.

Mason Boys Varsity Golf competes next in the 36-hole GMC Championship Tournament at Walden Ponds Golf Club on Tuesday, September 9, and Wednesday, September 10.
9/9-9/10 GMC at Walden         On Tuesday and Wednesday, September 9th & 10th, the Boys Golfers competed in the Greater Miami Conference Tournament, a 36-hole "winner take all" event - in that the team winners of the tournament are the league champions for the entire season no matter the results of any other matches or tournaments.  Mason was the defending champion team in the event, and they made an excellent effort to win the title for a second consecutive year, but Lakota West pulled away slowly throughout the tournament.  West increased their lead over eventual 2nd place finishers Lakota East and 3rd place Mason on every one of the four nines of the tournament.  Mason rallied early on the final day to surge ahead of Lakota East and begin to challenge Lakota West for the top position, but too many loose shots got away from the Comets on the final 9 holes of Day 2.

Mason was led by #1 player and senior star Curtis Crimmins.  Curtis followed up a solid 73 on day 1 with a phenomenal round of 68 (-4) on day 2 that included EIGHT BIRDIES!  Curtis finished at 141 (-3) total for the two days and was only 4 shots away from earning GMC Player of the Year Honors.  Other players who also earned first-team all-GMC Honors in addition to Curtis were junior Jack Hellman (159), junior Josh Morneau (158) and junior Jaxson Hutzelman (160).  Earning second-team all-GMC honors were senior Alex Chamberlain (164) and sophomore Diego Orozco (166).  The Comets have one more tournament this Sunday afternoon at Miami Whitewater Forest Golf Course before competing in the Sectional at the same golf course on Wed., Sept. 24.

Results of the GMC season - including the all-conference teams, Coach of the Year, and the Steve Schuck Sportsmanship Award winner from each of the 10 teams - will soon be posted on the conference's website www.gmcsports.com. Complete results of the GMC tourney are on https://www.baumspage.com/golf/gevent.php?peventID=16&table=C
9/14 GCGA invite @ Whitewater         On Sunday, September 14, the Comets Boys Golfers teed it up for the 18th regular season contest of their season, the Alexander Invitational at Miami Whitewater Forest Golf Course.  The Greater Cincinnati Golf Association managed this tournament and had the course set up similarly to how it will appear on the day of the Cincinnati D1 Sectional.

Junior Jaxson Hutzelman had an excellent day playing for Mason, as he recorded 2 bogeys, a double bogey, one birdie and 14 pars to post a score of 74(+3) and tie for first place individually in the 85-player field.  Senior Drew Freeman had the Comets second-best score with a 78 as the team recorded a score of 322 and finished 4th in the 17-team field.  Additional scores for Mason were junior Andrew Atchley with 86 and 85's from senior Curtis Crimmins and junior Josh Morneau.

The Comets compete next in the Division 1 Southwest Ohio Sectional on Wednesday, September 24th, returning to Whitewater Golf Course for that event.  The top 4 teams, plus the top 4 individuals not on a qualifying team, will advance to the District meet at Pipestone Golf Club on Monday, 10/6.  Mason tees off hole #1 at the Sectional at 8:30 am paired with St. Xavier and Talawanda HS.
9/24 SECTIONAL         On Wednesday, September 24, the Boys Golfers competed for the first time ever in the Cincinnati West Sectional at Miami Whitewater Golf Course.  The team shot a good total score of 314, but after waiting for over 2 hours for the remaining teams to finish play, they found out that their score was not good enough for the team to advance to the District meet.  The top 4 teams from each Sectional advance to the District level, and the Comets came in 5th for the second consecutive year.  St. X (295), Elder (300), Anderson (305) and LaSalle (309) advanced.

Individual players can qualify for the District level - if their team does not - by being among the top 4 scorers from a non-qualifying team.  In an unusual circumstance, the Comets were able to have TWO individuals advance to the District level.  Senior Curtis Crimmins finished with a score of 74 (+3) on the day and was tied for first among individual qualifiers, while junior Jack Hellmann shot 77 (+6) and tied for the 3rd individual qualifying spot.  Junior Jaxson Hutzelman shot 78 and just missed out on qualifying for a spot in the District meet by a single shot.  Completing the scoring for the Comets were junior Josh Morneau with an 85 and senior Alex Chamberlain with an 88.

Next, the Boys Golf Team will honor their 9 senior team members at the team's Senior Night Celebration (and match vs. Sycamore) on Tuesday, September 30, at Shaker Run Golf Club.  This will be the final match of the season for 16 of the 18 varsity Green and White Team players.

Curtis and Jack will compete in the District Qualifier at Pipestone Golf Club TODAY, Monday, October 6th, where they'll need to finish among the top 3 individuals not on a qualifying team in order to advance to the State Championship.

9/30 Sycamore at Shaker

On Tuesday, September 30th, the Mason Boys Golf program closed out their season by holding their annual Senior Night at Shaker Run Golf Course on the Meadows nine.  So that all 9 of the program's senior golfers could participate in the match for their respective teams, the Comets fielded 3 varsity teams in a Quad match against Sycamore.  Mason Varsity Green won on a 6th score tiebreaker against their younger counterparts on Mason Gray (a team comprised of only 10th and 11th graders) when both teams posted scores of 157.  Mason White was 3rd with a score of 173, and Sycamore was just behind them with a team total score of 175.

Junior Josh Morneau was the match medalist with a one-under-par score of 35.  Junior Jaxson Hutzelman was runner-up medalist in the match with an even-par 36.  Playing in positions 1-4 for Mason Green were seniors with the following scores: Curtis Crimmins 41; Alex Chamberlain 38; Sam O'Donnell 47; and Drew Freeman 42.  Playing in positions 1-5 for Mason White were seniors with the following scores: Patrick Buckley 46; Jadon Li 42; Vyom Vidwans 45; Greyson Rice 44; and Cooper Bruce 45.

Mason Green concludes their season - having played a schedule that consisted mostly of 18-hole tournaments - with a perfect nine-hole match record of 4-0.  The season has ended for 24 of the program's 26 golfers.

Junior Jack Hellmann and senior Curtis Crimmins will compete in the District Qualifier next Monday, October 6, at Pipestone Golf Club.  Many thanks to the multiple parents who came out to watch the team throughout the year, and we had an especially big crowd tonight when our many parents were joined by some members of the administration to honor our senior golfers.

10/6 DISTRICT at Pipestone

On Monday, October 6, the Mason Boys Golf Team closed out an excellent season with two individual qualifiers competing in the Southwest Ohio Division 1 District Golf Championship.  Senior Curtis Crimmins and junior Jack Hellmann both played well at the District meet but came up short of the individual qualifying score of 68 (-4) that would have been needed at Pipestone Golf Club for an individual to advance to the State Championship.

Curtis was making his second appearance at the District Championship, having competed there with the Comets team in 2023 as a sophomore.  Curtis made a 5-shot improvement over his first time playing in the District meet, as he posted a great round of 74 (+2) to close out his high school playing career.  Curtis averaged under 38 for the season, becoming only the third Comets golfer to do so in the past 3 years.  Junior Jack Hellmann posted a steady round of 80 (+8) in his first trip to the District meet.  He hopes to return in 2026 with the entire team qualifying for the District level.

With the Mason Boys Golf team's season now over, the Comets will start looking to the future.  The program is graduating 9 seniors, and they'll be honored at the end-of-season banquet.  Our varsity program is also RETURNING 9 PLAYERS who earned varsity letters in 2025 to compete in the 2026 season, so the future looks bright for a program with tremendous depth.

Mason Girls Golf competed at Tuesday's Sectional Tournament at Walden Ponds. The top four teams and top four individuals not on a qualifying team moved on to District. The Comets finished 5th overall as a team, just missing qualification shooting a team score of 351 (4 shots out of contention). Senior Ava Dattilo led the team on the front nine with an impressive even par 36, in which she carded 3 birdies.

After the front nine, Mason was sitting in 4th place. On the back nine, the team struggled a bit and it came down to the last few holes. It was a nail biting finish, as Walnut Hills was finishing on the front nine of the course. The final team score was 351, which just fell short by only 4 shots to Walnut Hills. It was the Comets third best team score of the season.

Mason Senior Ava Dattilo did qualify for the District Championships as an individual by posting a score of 81 (tied for 8th). Ava will advance to the Southwest District Tourney on Tuesday, October 7th at Pipestone GC.

She will be playing for a state berth (top 3 individuals not on a qualifying team).

Good Luck Ava!

10/7 District at Pipestone

The District Championships were were held at Pipestone on Wednesday, 10/8. Mason's Ava Dattilo competed with the best in Southwest Ohio.

Our team graduates four seniors this year and will be looking to fill some big shoes left behind by our seniors!

Congrats to Ava, all the players and coaches!
